The remediation of hazardous waste sites is an area of major environmental concern. The variability in character contaminated sites and associated safety considerations make their solution both unique and challenging. It is incumbent upon environmental engineering educators to properly prepare practitioners to solve these remediation problems. The evolution of sanitary engineering into a more holistic environmental engineering discipline has proceeded at varying rates at different universities. Consequently, the ability of existing programs to address the more unique problems associated with hazardous waste treatment may not be equally developed among various universities. In fact, some schools may not offer any appropiate course work in the area of hazardous waste treatment. Although many of the fundamental principles stressed in traditional sanitary engineering programs are applicable to the solution of more contemporary hazardous waste problems, the actual implementation of these principles is not clear nor directly transferable.
